JACKASS CUP 2014
Las Vegas- March 28-29 2014
Given the location of the trip- I thought it fitting that this year’s battle be termed the Jackass Cup. Lets face it, we all (or at least many of us) have an inner jackass- and if that jackass is going to be cultivated, coaxed, coerced or teased- where better than Las Vegas?
Building on last years format- the Jackass Cup is a 2 day Ryder Cup style tournament. There will be four, nine hole matches (2 on Friday at TPC Las Vegas and 2 on Saturday at Cascata) The first three matches will be team matches in a 4 man better ball format and the final match (the back 9 at Cascata) will be 6 singles matches. Each match will be worth ten points- It will take 75.5 points to win the cup. This event can end in a 75-75 tie in which case no money will change hands.
Scoring a 10 point match.
In scoring a 10 point match each hole is worth a point- in the event the hole is tied- each team gets ½ a point. The winner of the match gets an extra point. If there is a tie at the end of nine holes, the “extra” point is also split and the match ends in a 5-5 tie. A couple of notes- in a ten point match the sum of the scores of the two teams (or in the case of a singles match, the two players’) should always equal- yup you guessed it- 10. The next thing is that there are no “dead” holes. So even if you have lost the match – each hole counts. It is much better to lose 6.5-3.5 than 8-2. Each point will make a difference so play to the end.
Buy-In: $200. Plus Saturday Dinner/Drinks. Total Cash Pot $2,400
Winning Team takes all. Losing team also buys dinner for the winners on Saturday night. We will make reservations for Saturday night where the losing team will pick up the tab.
FORMING THE TEAMS
The details- we will form two teams of six players (Team Donkey and Team Mule) (Little did you know there is a genetic difference between a donkey and a mule. The donkey is 2 chromosomes short of a horse and a mule is the impotent/sterile offspring of a donkey and a horse and has 63 chromosomes. Needless to say they are both a mess.)
The teams will be determined based on index and random draw. We will look at the indexes on March 1 and slot the players from 1 – 12. (index table is attached) From there we will take players 1 and 2 and put them on separate teams (randomly), players 3 and 4 will be placed on separate teams (randomly). As a quick example, Sanjay and Vinay are the low indexes and will be placed on separate teams. Kiran and Nitin are the third and fourth players they must be on separate teams, with one joining Vinay and one joining Sanjay. Where Kiran and Nitin are placed will be determined by a coin flip. We will repeat this process with players 5 and 6, 7 and 8 and so on until we have two teams of six players with each index level represented on each team.
The team selections will take place Thursday night or Friday Morning in Vegas. This way the teams will have some time to strategize and send their teams out.
DAY 1 MATCHES – TPC Las Vegas
(Friday) – Blended Tees – 128 slope
Format: Four man better ball 10 point matches.
6 matches.
Better Ball Match- Please see link below for a description of better ball (four ball). Note that will use net scores and it will be in the 10 point format with the variation of every hole counts even after the match is decided. If anyone does not understand this- please let me know.
Note that the variation is that each hole still counts even if you can’t win the match. EVERY HOLE COUNTS!!
Each team will form 3 teams of 2 to play that day. The partners will be at the discretion of the teams. Team Donkey will declare who their first team in the first foursome will be and Team Mule will then declare their team to go out in the first foursome. After the first foursome is set, Team Mule will declare who their team in the second foursome will be, Team Donkey will then match. (3rd foursome will be the last people.)
On day one- the same teams will play each other twice. The front nine and back nine will be independent matches (we won’t be able to switch teams or opponents in the middle of the round so this adds to the strategy)
DAY 2 MATCHES – Front Nine –Cascata – Gold Tees.
Format: Four man better ball 10 point matches.
3 matches.
Four Man Better Ball - Please see link below for a description of better ball (four ball). Note that will use net scores and it will be 10 point matches.

Note that the index table details your stokes for the entire round- we will need to divide your course strokes by 2. If you have an odd number of strokes the extra stroke is given on the front nine.
Day 2–SINGLES MATCHES – Back Nine- Cascata – Tees are to be determined.
(Saturday).
Six Matches
This gets a little complicated. The singles matches are the back nine and are based on index. As such you must play the front nine in the same foursome as your back nine opponent. So we will determine the teams as follows: Team Mule will name their first player in the first foursome. By doing so, they will effectively determine Team Donkey’s first player. Example: if Romy and Biren have to play each other on the back nine and Team Mule sends Romy out first, Team Donkey must send Biren. Team Donkey will then name Biren’s teammate and effectively also name Romy’s teammate in doing so. Continuing with the Example- Team Donkey sends Sandeep out, then Bobby must also go. So Romy and Bobby would be Team Mule’s representatives and would be a team on the front 9 playing Sandeep and Biren and they would play singles on the back nine. Team Donkey will then name their first player in the next foursome etc.. After the groups are set, we will do better ball team for the front nine and singles for the back nine. This process must take place on Friday- because my head will spin a bit and we need to have it all set well before we are going to the course on Saturday.
This is head to head play in the same 10 point format, based on index. We will go out as detailed above with the number 1 index playing the number 2, number 3 playing number 4 etc.
(Note these matches are already set and are in the excel spreadsheet- you know who you play and the number of strokes you are giving or getting- you just don’t know your team yet.) (if there is a way for us to get a scoring update for the group after the front nine matches I will do what I can to get a total and email it out.
RULES:
It is expected that everyone knows the rules of the game, however each match will police itself. You can all agree on what to do for any given situation, as those affected will be present.
Range Finders and GPS
These are legal but the slope adjustments must not be used. You are on your honor to turn this feature off.
FORFEITS
If you must forfeit because of legitimate injury or legitimate illness- your singles match is a draw and the team match that you would have been a part of is a forfeit with the opposing team getting 6 points and your team getting 4. Note a hangover is not a forfeit- it’s a fuck up. In this instance the opposing team gets 6 points for both singles or team matches, and for each match forfeited because of you – you must pay each member of your team $20, excluding legitimate reasons. So if you miss a full round- you owe your team a total of $200.
PACE OF PLAY:
We have a lot of golf to play that weekend so it will be helpful to work on pace of play. If you are out of a hole, pickup. Have fun- but lets face the facts that we all have the handicaps that we do for a reason…..read the greens, look at yardgages etc….but hurry up and hit the damn ball.
SIDE BETS:
These are encouraged. You will be going head to head within your groups and you can place more action with individuals on the opposing team as well. Bet on the other matches…do whatever you want to do….if you can find someone to take the bet, I encourage it to be made – it makes for lively dinner conversation. I would love to buy one of my Friday competitors a golf shirt at Cascata on Saturday…but you will have to beat my team on Friday- any takers?
If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments let me know.
