SIMIAN CUP 2013
“Will the higher (golf) primates please stand up?”
Arizona- April 25-28 2013
(April 16 – update. Gents this version is updated and pretty final. Biren has to leave early Sunday so the tournament rounds will be Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The indexes and course handicaps are in the accompanying excel file. If you have questions- let me know.)
Alright Men- After careful consideration and some limited discussion with some very capable sounding boards, it is determined that in an effort to maximize the fun, generate healthy competition and provide channels for betting, we will have a three day team challenge for the Simian Cup.
What is the Simian Cup? It is a 3 day Ryder Cup style tournament with the first two days being team matches in a 4 man better ball format and the final day being 6 singles matches. Each match will be worth one point- so on days 1 and 2, there will be three points at stake and on the last day – there will be six points up for grabs. It will take 6.5 points to win the cup. This event can end in a 6-6 tie in which case no money will change hands.
If a match ends in a tie, each team gets half a point.
Buy-In: $250. Total Pot $3,000
Winning Team takes all.
FORMING THE TEAMS
The details- we will form two teams of six players (Team Chimp and Team Baboon) The teams will be determined based on index and random draw. We will look at the indexes on April 15 and slot the players from 1 – 12. From there we will take players 1 and 2 and put them on separate teams (randomly), players 3 and 4 will be placed on separate teams (randomly). As a quick example, Sanjay and Vinay are the low indexes and will be placed on separate teams. Kiran and Nitin are the third and fourth players they must be on separate teams, with one joining Vinay and one joining Sanjay. Where Kiran and Nitin are placed will be determined by a coin flip. We will repeat this process with players 5 and 6, 7 and 8 and so on until we have two teams of six players with each index level represented on each team.
The team selections will take place after the April 15 indexes are out. We may select teams at the airport prior to the flight – team meetings can happen on the plane unless a majority would like to do this earlier.

Each team will form 3 teams of 2 to play that day. The partners will be at the discretion of the teams. Team Chimp will declare who their first team in the first foursome will be and Team Babboon will then declare their team to go out in the first foursome. After the first foursome is set, Team Babboon will declare who their team in the second foursome will be, Team Chimp will then match. (3rd foursome will be the last people.)
(In order for me to get the strokes and everything ready before we get to the course- this must all happen on the flight over and must be completed 20 mins before we land.)
DAY 2 MATCHES – Grayhawk Raptor – Monument

We must have the teams and matches decided the night before these matches take place.
Day 3 –SINGLES MATCHES – Troon North – Monument
(Saturday) – Silver Tees 130 slope.
Six Matches
This is head to head match play, based on index. We will go out by index with the number 1 index playing the number 2, number 3 playing number 4 etc.
Six points are available on this day so nothing is decided until the final day.
(Note these matches are already set and are in the excel spreadsheet- you know who you play and the number of strokes you are giving or getting- you just don’t know your team yet.)
RULES:
It is expected that everyone knows the rules of the game, however each match will police itself. You can all agree on what to do for any given situation, as those affected will be present.
Range Finders and GPS
These are legal but the slope adjustments must not be used. You are on your honor to turn this feature off.
PACE OF PLAY:
We have a lot of golf to play that weekend so it will be helpful to work on pace of play. If you are out of a hole, pickup. Everyone raise your right hand and repeat after me:
The Simian-ocratic Oath
I promise not to look for my 5th shot in a cactus when my partner is on the green in 2. I promise to read the green and take my glove off as soon as I get to the green. I promise to start my four minute pre-shot routine as soon as possible. I promise that I will use my best efforts, good spirit and charm to win the Simian Cup for myself and my team and achieve higher primate status.
SIDE BETS:
These are encouraged. You will be going head to head within your groups and you can place more action with individuals on the opposing team as well. Bet on the other matches…do whatever you want to do….if you can find someone to take the bet, I encourage it to be made – it makes for lively dinner conversation. As an example- we are set to have a great dinner on the Saturday night- after singles matches- a dinner bet with your opponent is a good start.
Sunday will be a fun round- we will go out randomly and bet from there.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments let me know.
