MOBSTER INVITATIONAL
Punju Golfers Association
Mobster Invitational
Palm Springs March 29- March 31 2018
Total Buy in for Team and Individual Games: $300 plus Dinner
It’s all about family- or The Family. Our 2018 tournament will be comprised of two teams- or this year- families. The Corleones vs The Sopranos. Each family with their own distinct characteristics- The Corleones were New York based- classy, sophisticated, cerebral, ruthless. The Sopranos- New Jersey based, gritty, tenacious, temperamental, effective. However, the theme of family (team) was strong in each. You can see from the following links how each viewed, family and loyalty.
Corleone:

Soprano:

While the styles might be different the messages are the same- loyalty is paramount, team before self, and dress well (shoot the cuffs).
The Mobster Invitational is a 3-day modified stableford style tournament. We will have 2 families of 8 (the Corleones and the Sopranos) competing but, in an effort to accommodate the possibility that some will not play all three days, we are changing the format, from past years, to allow some flexibility. We will also have an individual flighted tournament with flight and day money. With the permission of the course, we will also have a playoff for the individual flight winners to determine the overall individual champion.
Modified Stableford Scoring:
Stableford scoring is done hole by hole based on your net score on the hole. You will receive points for your score on the particular hole. A link for more information:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/golf/rules_and_equipment/4749261.stm.
Note we will score based on your net score for any given hole and the points are as follows:
Net Bogey: 1 point
Net Par: 2 points
Net Birdie 3 points
Net Eagle 4 points
Net Albatross 5 points.
We will play at 80% of your course handicap and we will peg to the lowest in the group which is Greg.
TEAM GAME:
Buy in: $100 per man plus the Champions Dinner on Saturday night.
We will select two families of 8 that will participate in a 3-day cumulative event.
Day 1- 5 balls.
Nicklaus Tournament Course- Championship Tees, 134 slope, 6522 yards
Day 2- 3 balls.
Stadium Course- Combo Tees, 136 slope, 6383 yards
Day 3- 7 balls.
Norman Course, Blue/White Combo Tees 128 slope, 6427 yards
To explain- on day one, for each team, we will take the best 5 scores (of the 8 in the family) on each hole, to arrive at the family’s total stableford points for the hole and the day. On day 2, it will be the three best scores on each hole and on day 3 the best 7 on each hole. The family with the highest points at the end of the third day wins. They will collect one hundred from someone on the opposing team and can order a big fat tomahawk chop and not have to pay for it at dinner on Saturday night.
Note- I reserve the right to adjust the number of balls that count on any given day if we have less than full squads teeing off on that day.
Should we have someone sit out for injury as already suggested – we will equalize by taking the family that has an extra player and drawing two names out of a hat at the end of the round- the first name drawn will not count for the front nine and the second name drawn will not count for the back nine on that day. Remember this is for injury or precaution related to past injuries and even real sickness- not for hangovers and the like.
INDIVIDUAL GAME:
This format lends itself to an individual game as well. As such, we will have day money (for the most individual points on any given day). We are also going to have four flights of four- based on index, with flight winners and a playoff after day three with the winner getting money for themselves and their team.
Buy in is $200 for the individual portion- which also includes a pot for on-course contests which will be worth $300 in total. There is also an $800 pot for the individual winner’s team (explained below).
Day Money Pots are $150 per day ($450 total).
Payouts are as follows for the most stableford points (regardless of flight) on each day:
1st place $75
2nd place $50
3rd place $25
(if there are ties- money will be split.)
Flighted Individual Cumulative Tournament:
Flight Winners Get $150, Second place gets $50
We will place all players in flights of four based on index. As such, each flight will have two Corleones and two Sopranos (this is important as all those who qualify for the playoff will play for individual money as well as an $800 pot for the team). Simple cumulative stableford scoring will determine the winners. If there is a tie for for first, the tiebreaker will be as follows: the highest points on day 3, if still tied- the highest points on day 2 if still tied- coin flip. If there is a tie for second, the money will be split.
The flights are as follows:
Brasi Flight: Greg
Manish
Deepak
Sanjay
Moltisanti Flight: Vinay
Bobby
Sachin
Kiran
Clemenza Flight: Biren
Sandeep
Nitin
Romy
Blundetto Flight: Ajay
Chetan
Par
Sunil
THE INDIVIDUAL PLAYOFF AND THE “I LOVE THAT GUY POT”
The four flight winners will play a sudden death playoff after the round on Saturday to determine the individual champion. Stableford format – sudden death. There payout is as follows:
1st place: $500 Plus the “I love that Guy Pot” for his team
2nd place $250
3rd place $100
For expediency, if more than one player is eliminated on a single hole, they will split the pot or pots for the placement. (Remember it is stableford so a 0 ties any other 0 regardless of gross raw score.)
IMPORTANT
To keep this a team game, you will all pay me $250 each. (just kidding- want to see if anyone is still reading this.)
To keep this a team game, I have built in the “I love that guy pot” (“ILTGP”). This is an $800 pot to be split among the individual winner’s team. Example- if Ajay wins, he gets the first place money above, and he and his team will each get $100 from the “I love that Guy pot”, which in this example will be renamed to the “I love Ajay Pot” (“ILAP”). This will keep us all interested in the outcome of the individual playoff and will be fun to drink, watch, heckle etc. during the playoff. The playoff should be fun – like a horserace. Please note that strokes will be adjusted and pegged to the lowest guy in the playoff – so unless Greg is in the playoff, everyone will lose a stroke or two which may or may not make a difference.
Lastly on this front: If all the flight winners are on the same team; the losing team with no representation can buy a spot in the playoff foursome by paying the lowest ranked (by stableford points) $200. If they opt to do so, that player must accept the money and take a seat. The underrepresented team must send out their highest point getter over the weekend to represent.
Closest to the Pins- Nitin will organize with the courses- $300 in on course contests (Most likely closest to the pins).
Total Betting Exposure: For all days, games and closest to the pins- $300 plus dinner. Note: To lose this much you have to not win any of the on-course contests, not come in the top three on any given day, come in third or fourth in your flight, be on the losing team and your teammate must not win the individual playoff.
I will collect the individual game money, and contest money at the end of the round on Friday- please have $200 exact- this will save us from the hassles of collecting each day etc. Note- I am not collecting the team money- if your team loses: the two losing members of each Saturday foursome is to pay the two winning members of that foursome.
HOLE IN ONE POT:
I was going to do a hole in one pot- but screw that- you get a hole in one- you buy drinks like you are supposed to.
FORMING THE TEAMS
The details- we will form two families of eight players (the Corleones and the Sopranos) The teams will be determined based on index and random draw as has been done in the past. The one and two will be on separate teams and the three and four will be drawn to separate teams etc. We will select teams March 16 at lunch- LB steak at 12:30. Contact Ajay if you haven’t already to attend.
THE FOURSOMES
Since we are playing stableford we will simply ask each team to produce their twosome that will play in each group without consultation with the other team. Each team submits and the groupings will be formed. On day three we will go out by flight.
RULES:
It is expected that everyone knows the rules of the game, but you have representatives from each team present. However, given the individual pots we must play by the same rules –if a question arises we must have a way to resolve- get the actual ruling or play it both ways and then get the ruling. GIMME PUTS MUST BE IN THE LEATHER OF YOUR OWN PUTTER- (35-inch maximum length putter) – this is important given that we are accumulating points overall.
RANGE FINDERS AND GPS:
These are legal but the slope adjustments must not be used. You are on your honor to turn this feature off.
PACE OF PLAY:
We have a lot of golf to play that weekend so it will be helpful to work on pace of play. If you can’t score a net bogey please pick up your ball and move on- you can’t help your team or yourself in this format so hit the next tee shot.
SIDE BETS:
These are encouraged. The format lends itself to lots of betting- you can bet anyone based on stableford score for each day or the total or all of the above. You can bet within your foursome as well.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or comments let me know.
